Mars, the fourth planet from the sun, is 53% smaller than Earth. It has a thin atmosphere composed of mainly carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and argon gases. Its atmosphere offers little protection from incoming meteorites and easily lets heat from the Sun escape the planet. If you were to stand on its surface, it would feel like spring at your feet, and winter at your head. There is not a sustainable amount of breathable oxygen on Mars to support a human.
Olympus Mons is roughly the same size as Arizona and about 72,000 feet tall. A large canyon system called Valles Mariners is 3,000 miles long, ten times the size of the grand canyon. Mars has nearly the same surface as all of Earth’s dry land. It has a diameter of 4212 miles and is the seventh largest planet in the solar system. Mars has a tinted red surface because of the oxidation of iron at its surface.
