Venus, the second planet from the Sun is similar in size to Earth. However, similarities end there. Its surface is hot enough to melt lead and from the surface, due to its thick atmosphere, the Sun appears to be a smear of distant light. Venus’s day is longer then its year and it spins the opposite direction as Earth. It has an atmosphere of carbon dioxide and clouds composed of sulfuric acid, blanketing the planet and preventing heat loss.
Over 1600 major volcanic features are present on Venus. A majority of them are large or small shield volcanoes, but there are also some Unusual Constructs and a few Large Flow features. Maat Mons is the tallest, reaching a height of 6 miles. The largest volcano on Venus is Theia Mons, with a lava flow spanning an impressive 497 square miles. Eruptions on Venus are regional and less organized.
