How to Use the Comparing Fractions Calculator
Comparing different mathematical formats can be tricky. This tool simplifies the process by allowing you to enter fractions (e.g., 2/3), mixed numbers (e.g., 1 1/2), decimals (e.g., 0.75), and percentages (e.g., 80%).

Methods for Comparing Fractions and Decimals
To compare values accurately, mathematicians typically use one of three methods:
- The Decimal Conversion Method: This is the method used by our calculator. By converting every value into a decimal, you create a “level playing field.” For example, to compare 3/4 and 0.8, you convert 3/4 to 0.75. Since 0.75 < 0.8, you know that 3/4 is the smaller value.
- The Common Denominator Method: When comparing two fractions, you can find a least common denominator (LCD). Once the denominators are the same, you simply compare the numerators.
- Cross-Multiplication: For two fractions a/b and c/d, you can multiply a × d and b × c. Comparing these two products will tell you which original fraction is larger.
