Learning to Turn Percents into Fractions
Have you ever seen a sign that says “50% off”? A percentage is just a cool way of saying “out of 100.” The word “percent” actually means “for every hundred.” Because of this, you can turn any percentage into a fraction by simply putting the number on top of 100. For example, if you have 25%, you can write it as the fraction 25/100. This tells you that you have 25 pieces of a 100-piece puzzle.
Even though 25/100 is correct, mathematicians like to “simplify” fractions to make them easier to read. Simplifying is like shrinking the numbers down while keeping the amount the same. To do this, you find a number that can divide into both the top and the bottom perfectly. For 25/100, you can divide both numbers by 25. This gives you 1/4, which is much easier to imagine!
If a percentage is bigger than 100, like 150%, your fraction will have a top number that is bigger than the bottom. This is called an “improper” fraction.
