How to Calculate the Area of a Parallelogram

A parallelogram is a four-sided polygon where opposite sides are parallel and equal in length. Depending on the information you have available, there are three common ways to find its area.

Methods for Finding Area

  • Base and Height Method: This is the most common approach. If you know the length of the base and the perpendicular height (altitude), simply multiply them together.
  • Sides and Angle Method: If you know the lengths of two adjacent sides and the angle between them, you can use trigonometry. The formula uses the sine of the angle to determine the vertical height.
  • Diagonals Method: If you only have the lengths of the two diagonals and the angle at which they intersect, you can still find the area by calculating half the product of the diagonals and the sine of their interior angle.

Properties of a Parallelogram
