It all started when silver was discovered, and the first mine was opened. Soon after, mining settlements were established, as crowds of silver-hungry prospectors set up camps along the mountainous terrain, beginning the great boom of silver mining. Even though it originally started on the Bonanza Flat, the silver mining workforce gradually spread to other areas, and even other materials like lead and gold.
Ontario Silver Mine
Discovered by accident, the Ontario silver mine was purchased by prospectors on August 24, 1874, and grew to become a major miner of silver and lead. James Haggin and Lloyd Tevis constructed and installed necessary technology into the mine to make it productive, including hoists and stamp mill. The mine was almost completely unprofitable for the first three years of operation. As a result of limited money, a owner, George Hearst, sold some of his personal belongings to pay the costs of the mine. These pretty pennies weren’t wasted though, and by the late 1870s, the Ontario silver mine had produced 50 million dollars’ worth of silver and lead.
