Calculating asphalt requirements accurately is a multi-step process that balances volume with material density. Because asphalt is sold by weight (typically short tons in the US), you must first determine the cubic volume of your project area. Square footage multiplied by thickness gives you the volume, which is then multiplied by density (typically 145 lbs/ft³).

Choosing the correct thickness is vital for the longevity of your pavement. Residential driveways typically use 2-3 inches, while commercial parking lots or heavy truck routes may require 4-8 inches of compacted material.

Success depends on sub-base preparation, water management with proper slopes, and laying material during favorable weather (rising above 50°F).
