Abraham Lincoln was a total legend who changed America forever. He was born in a log cabin, which is crazy to think about because he ended up as president! Lincoln was super smart and taught himself pretty much everything he knew. When he became the 16th president, the country was in huge trouble because of the Civil War. It was North vs. South, and things were really intense. Lincoln’s main goal was to keep the United States a single country, no matter what. He seriously went through so much stress during that whole time, but he never gave up on trying to do the right thing for everyone.
The biggest thing Lincoln is famous for is getting rid of slavery. He issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which basically said all enslaved people in the Southern states were free. This was a massive deal and a huge turning point in the war and for human rights. It wasn’t easy, and a lot of people hated him for it, but he knew it was the right thing to do. He also gave some really famous speeches, like the Gettysburg Address, which is super short but really powerful. Lincoln didn’t get to see the country totally heal, though; sadly, he was assassinated right after the war ended. Still, his legacy of freedom and keeping the US united is something we still learn about today.
